Waterproofing FAQs
With nearly 60 years of experience solving sewer, plumbing, and flooding problems around Chicago, our team of experts has seen it all. Here are some of the questions we get most about flooding and leak prevention and repairs.
Why does our basement flood during heavy rain?
In most situations, there are 3 reasons you have water in your basement during heavy rain:
- You have a total or partial blockage in your main sewer line and the volume of water from downspouts and outside floor drains is too much for the pipe to handle. If this is the case, rodding the main sewer line could correct the problem.
- The city sewer cannot handle the volume of water. Once the water level in the city sewer system rises to the level of your basement drains, it will start to come up in your basement. A backwater valve, flood control system, or overhead sewer system is needed in this
case. - Ground water will begin to cause seepage from the floor or foundation. In most cases, a drain tile is needed to correct the problem. However, sometimes foundation cracks are the problem and need to be sealed.
How do I know which solution is needed to properly waterproof our home?
The best way to figure out what is needed is to schedule one of our technicians to assess the situation.
If the water is coming into the basement but all basement drains are working, then you more than likely have a seepage problem.
If the water in the basement begins to drain after the rain stops and you have no downspouts or outside floor drains tied into your sewer line, you most likely need a flood control system or an overhead sewer system.
If the water in the basement begins to drain after the rain stops and you have downspouts or outside floor drains tied into your sewer line, you either have a partial block or the volume of water was too much for your pipes to properly drain. Rodding the line is the best option for a blocked pipe.
How do I stop foundation leaks?
Along with seepage pipe installations, we can also install dimple board along the foundation walls to help prevent water from entering the basement. We can also repair foundation cracks with epoxy, resin and hydraulic cement.
